History of waterproofing in the world

The challenges of water damage and leakages has been traced back to the dawn of the civilization. Traces and usages of waterproofing can be detected as far as 13,000 years ago and considered as one of the oldest professions. As times pass by, the nature and usage of waterproofing has improved drastically with discovery of new techniques, materials and technologies. One thing for sure, the importance of keeping  the building safe from water infiltration and damages since the ancient times.

Earliest civilization of waterproofing

The earliest waterproofing technique is first used by the people to protect their food from spoiling during the winter. The primitive way of using the large leaves and tree saps to prevent moisture from foods during the winter. Years later, bitumen emulsion made from surface of peat bogs which have appearance of a black goo which similar to usages of asphalt was used to repair boats. 

Origin of the waterproofing can be traced back to the ancient times, where waterproofing used various materials and techniques unlike the modern days waterproofing materials.

In the ancient Egypt, traces of waterproofing was founded in the tomb at the pyramids of Giza, where it was close to perfect condition despite facing floods annually from the Niles River. Further discovery that the ancient Egypt had been applying bitumen emulsion in their buildings and structures since 3600 BC.

Waterproofing in the middle age

During the middle ages, wax, pitch and tallow are mixed to form a coating for the roofs and walls to prevent the infiltration of water. While in the Industrial Revolution with introduction of new materials and technologies leads to new waterproofing materials such as rubber, asphalt and PVC (polyvinyl chloride)

Waterproofing in the 20th Century

Due to the advancement of technologies, various new waterproofing techniques and materials are being introduced such as spray on waterproofing, self adhesives membranes and nano- technology waterproofing.
