The Advantages of Cementitious Waterproofing Membrane Coating

As what its name suggest, cementitious waterproofing membrane is referring to cement based coating to create a layer of waterproofing barrier.  It is a breathable coatings that provide masonry and concrete exteriors negative and positive – side waterproofing coating. Used as a base before tiling, on top of masonry patching and concrete tops to prevent water infiltration. Cementitious waterproofing have similarity to concrete and masonry substrates due to their cementitious characteristic hence a robust bonding strength. Cementitious coating shields the substrate from the effects of destructive acid, moisture and resist chemical attacks on the masonry or concrete.

The advantages and benefits of Cementitious waterproofing coating

  • Easy to mix – as it the similarity of handling it is close to a cement. The powder is usually mix with water or liquid provided by the manufacturer until it attains the right texture following the ratio provided in the instruction or data sheet.
  • Easy to apply – can use various method from trowel, spraying and brushes that are used for painting.
  • Seamless application – there will be no jointing issues and adds to the visual feature of the structure. On top of that it improves the appearance of the concrete or substrate.
  • Resistance – it is an exceptional freeze resistant, abrasion resistant,  and also chemical resistant.
  • Other usages – can be used as levelling mortar

Preparation of cementitious waterproofing membrane coating Brushcrete.

Ensure substrate surfaces must be clean, free from grease, oil and loosely adhering particles. Steel and iron surfaces must be clean, free from rust, grease and oil. All surfaces must be as true and flat as possible. Substrate can be prepared by various mechanical preparation techniques such as high pressure water jetting and proper pre-wetted to a saturated surface dry condition.

Spalled concrete should be cut back to sound concrete and made good with suitable cementitious repair mortar such as CHEMGROUT 215.

BRUSHCRETE is supplied in premeasured units and should be mixed at site utilizing clean containers. Slowly add the powder to the liquid and mix, using a slow speed drill fitted with a suitable paddle. MIX AND USE. Do not mix more materials that cannot be fully utilized under thirty minutes. Although BRUSHCRETE is supplied in pre-measured packs, part packs can be used by mixing 2 to 2.5 volumes of powder to 1 mixed during application. DO NOT RE-TEMPER WITH WATER. For trowel applications, use only 90% of Part B (approximately 4.5 kg).

Brushcrete Cementitious waterproofing applied

Damp down the concrete surface with clean water. Whilst damp, but free of standing water, apply using a short, stiff bristle brush or roller. Trowel application can be undertaken as necessary. For heavy 6-10 mm depressions, honeycombs etc, utilize less gauging liquid and one coat is necessary to achieve the desired thickness. Apply the second or subsequent coats after the previous coat has dried. lt is recommended for general resurfacing, that each coat should be a minimum of 1mm thick. A minimum of two coats must be applied.

Durability of Cementitious Waterproofing

This waterproofing method has many similarities to cement, and its durability is one of them. Cementitious waterproofing is chemical resistant, abrasion-resistant, and weather-resistant, making it good for outdoor use as well. It also has good freeze resistance in case you’re applying waterproofing in really cold environments. This method will keep water contained even under plenty of wear and tear. If you expect the area you’re waterproofing to see some abrasion, harsh weather, and other challenges, then this method can hold up.

Excellent at bonding various surfaces, including old and new concrete

Sometimes, you have to work with different materials when you’re waterproofing something. Cementitious waterproofing is good at bonding porous and non-porous surfaces. If you’re working with old and new concrete, this coating can hold it together.

Resistant to mold growth, preventing damage

In addition to its resistance to many external factors, a cementitious coating is also resistant to mold. Mold is a common cause of building damage, especially if the materials are not durable or if the problem is not addressed right away. It is caused by excess moisture or water that seeps through cracks on surfaces. With the proper application of cementitious waterproofing, you can prevent any mold from developing on the premises.

Good breathability preventing moisture buildup while remaining watertight

A cementitious coating is excellent at deterring water from seeping or passing through, but it is still breathable. This means that the coating remains permeable to water vapor. Evaporation can still happen, and being watertight doesn’t make it airtight as well. For some situations, a permeable coating is much better.

Area of Application

Cementitious Waterproofing application areas – it can be used in various areas such as water treatment plants, sewage treatment plants, bridges, dams, railway and subway systems, marine cargo ports and docks, parking structures and basements.
