5 tips to waterproofing toilet and bathroom

Toilets and bathrooms are one of the most potential areas that would cause leakages. As these areas are prone to high exposure of waters on daily basis, there’s a higher chance of failure of toilet compare to other areas which could lead to potential water damage to others areas especially to areas below the toilet which is common a common issue.

1. Applying angle fillet

Angle fillet is method of application where applied in the corner of the areas within the joint of the wall and floor. Waterproofing membrane are applied in the corner of two different surfaces at less than 180 degrees.

 

Angle fillet is important as it strengthen the weakest point of the waterproofing where 2 different surfaces which is the wall and floor have the most stress movement.

2. Waterproofing the wall

It is always important to ensure applicators apply waterproofing membrane on the wall as well, as some applicators would skip waterproofing or applied it thinly on the wall to ensure their work complete earlier and reduce the hassle. Water can penetrate the wall through water splashes or near the shower areas. If the waterproofing fails, water marks or spotted marks will be visible on the other side of the wall.

3. Ensure all cracks and gaps are filled

Having all your bathrooms and toilets accessories installed, fill the gaps and cracks between the items between the wall and floors with toilet graded silicones such as plumbing fixtures and tabletops.

4. Apply waterproofing before installing tiles

It is always advisable to have your waterproofing system applied before putting on the tiles instead of relying on nano waterproofing that applies directly to the tiles. This is due to its durability over the time as it relies on a thin film to protect the surface.

5. Get waterproofing system from the same brand

 It is always recommended to get the same brand, especially if it’s recommended in the manufacturer’s product statement. Different manufacturer waterproofing products are almost similar, however there are times the small differences in its specification and advantages. Therefore, manufacturer will produce products that would compliment and goes very well as a whole waterproofing systems. Using other brand’s product may have a risk, especially when the materials are not compatible. More often than not, waterproofing products with similar specification do not have huge price differences, therefore is not worth taking the risk for the small amount that are being save.
